Congrats to an Ideal Student
We want to send a very special congratulations to recent Eastside Memorial High graduate and Anthropos alumni, Anthony Gilbert, for earning the Emerald Eagle FULL SCHOLARSHIP to the University of North Texas!
Anthony is a 5 year student of Anthropos – starting in 8th grade at Dobie Middle School on flute, moving to alto sax, then guitar at Eastside Memorial. On stage with us, you may have seen Anthony ripping guitar solos, holding down the groove on bass, and leading the horn section - all in one show!
We couldn’t be prouder of Anthony, who has overcome a lot in his life to achieve his goal of attending one of the top music schools in the country. Many thanks to the Anthropos mentors and colleagues that helped encourage him along the way. We wish him the best!
“I want to come back as a mentor for Anthropos, and tell these young kids that their hard work will pay off. It won’t always look pretty, but in the end, it’s so worth it!”
- Anthony Gilbert, Class of 2011, Freshman at North Texas University.

East Austin Band Kids Play Stubbs with their Music Pro Mentors
AUSTIN, TX: May 16, 2011—Austin-based nonprofit Anthropos Arts announced plans for its annual end-of-year concert on Sunday, May 22nd at Stubb’s Waller Creek Amphitheater from 5:00 – 7:00 pm. The show features performances by East Austin music students in grades 6–12 who have spent the last several months receiving individual instruction from some of Austin’s finest professional musicians. The students will perform on the Stubb’s stage with their musician-mentors.
“Our program is about so much more than providing music lessons to Austin children from low-income families,” says Dylan Jones, founding executive director of Anthropos and lead instructor. “Anyone performing a solo for the first time experiences personal growth, but this growth is particularly powerful for a shy young person with the perception of life with limited opportunities. At our May concert, our students are superstars performing for a huge cheering crowd. Witnessing the self-esteems blossom is why we do this work.”
In all, approximately 100 students from 12 Austin schools — many of whom are receiving individual instruction for the first time — will take the stage at Stubb’s. The Anthropos Arts Twelfth Anniversary Concert is open to the general public, with a $15 donation requested at the door.
Anthropos Arts’ music-education programs, now in their 12th year, pair students from Title I schools in East Austin together with musician-mentors for free in-school lessons on music theory, performance, technique, and improvisation. In schools with average graduation rates of around 60%, Anthropos students have a near 100% graduation rate, with over 80% continuing to college on scholarship.
Approximately 65% of Anthropos students show an increase in GPA while coupled with an Anthropos mentor. Since its beginning 12 years ago, Anthropos Arts has donated $750,000 in services to AISD and Manor students, at no charge to the districts, students or their families. At the annual concert, every student performs at least one improvised solo before friends, family, and the general public.

Date of event: Sunday, May 22nd, 2011, 5:30–7:00 p.m. $15 suggested donation admission supports Anthropos Arts programs.
Location: Stubb’s Outdoor Waller Creek Amphitheatre, 801 Red River, Austin
Sponsorship Opportunity:
Anthropos Arts relies on a combination of grants and private and corporate donations to sustain its program. The highly publicized end-of-year concert, with an anticipated audience of several hundred East Austin family members and friends and community supporters, serves as an important fundraiser – especially critical this year with the anticipated Texas state budget cuts for the Arts. Businesses and individuals inspired to support Anthropos and the life-changing opportunities it provides for under-privileged Austin children, can choose from several advertising sponsorship opportunities of the May 22nd concert.
More information and photos are available, as are interview opportunities with staff and students.

OZOMATLI plays Reagan High School for Anthropos Arts
On Wed, Feb 16th, our good friends and fellow advocates of equal opportunity in music education, OZOMATLI, donated their time to perform for all students and staff at Austin’s own Reagan High School. We have brought some amazing musicians into Reagan over the last 12 years- as performers and instructors – but these multi-Grammy award winners really take the cake. Several Anthropos lessons students - under the direction of legendary Reagan Band Director, Ormide Armstrong – even sat in with the band, performing for an audience of over 800 students, staff, and media.
Thanks to Austin’s FuturoFund for helping sponsor this unforgettable performance, thanks to all the folks on the ground for making it happen, and tremendous thanks to OZOMATLI and their crew for helping make a huge difference in the lives of our students!
